Solo Travel in Lapland: A Local Guide's Advice for Travelling Alone

Travelling alone is one of the most rewarding ways to explore the world, but it often requires much more planning than many people realise.

Finding activities that accept solo bookings isn't always easy. Unfortunately, some travellers even face the disappointment of having a long-awaited tour cancelled at the last minute simply because not enough people signed up.

Last winter, I heard several stories like this from visitors to Lapland.

That didn't feel right to me.

That's why many of the experiences I personally operate have a minimum group size of just one guest. If you book one of these tours, I'll do everything I can to make sure it goes ahead—even if you're the only participant.

Some experiences provided together with trusted local partners, such as certain reindeer and husky safaris, require a minimum of two participants. Whenever this applies, it's always clearly stated in the tour description before you book.

When people travel to Lapland, many have spent months planning their holiday, travelled thousands of kilometres, and invested a significant amount of money to make their dream trip happen. I don't believe anyone should miss out on an unforgettable experience simply because other travellers didn't make a booking.

To me, solo travellers are just as important as couples, families, and groups of friends. Everyone deserves the opportunity to experience Lapland with confidence, knowing exactly what to expect before they book.

One of the things I enjoy most as a guide is watching complete strangers become friends during the day. My tours often last several hours, giving people plenty of time to chat, share stories, and learn about each other's cultures. By the end of the day, what started as a group of strangers often feels like a group of friends.

If you're travelling solo, here's one piece of advice I'd like to share: don't be afraid to connect with other travellers. Sometimes the best travel companion is staying in the very same accommodation as you.

Last winter, something made me smile. Within just a few hours, two solo bookings for my Riisitunturi tour arrived from the same accommodation. Later, I discovered that the travellers had met during the evening meal at their hotel. They started talking, realised they were both interested in the same experience, and decided to book the tour together.

What began as two independent travellers became a shared adventure—and, by the end of the day, two new friends.

Moments like these remind me that travel is about so much more than visiting beautiful places. It's about the people you meet, the conversations you have, and the unexpected connections that can turn a good trip into an unforgettable one.
